Joyce F. Hartman died on August 11 at her Southampton residence. She was 88.
Born on July 19, 1921, in New York City, she was the oldest of three daughters born to Joseph and Sylvia Frankel. A 1944 graduate of Smith College, she worked as a researcher for Look Magazine during World War II. Later, from 1958 to 1979, she was the New York editor for Houghton Mifflin Co., and edited books by Rachel Carson (“The Silent Spring”), Louis Auchincloss, Benjamin Spock, Carson McCullers, Paul Theroux, Daniel Schorr, Jerzy Kosinski, and many other writers, working in both fiction and nonfiction.
A resident of Southampton since 1991, she was involved in numerous community activities. She was an active member of Friends of the Rogers Memorial Library, serving as treasurer of the board for many years.
She is survived by two daughters, Gail Hartman and her husband Peter Clark of Minnesota, and Alison Hartman and her husband Dale Walker of Maryland; and four grandchildren, Emily and Alex Clark, and Jake and Adam Fishman. She is also survived by Jenny Seupersad, her caretaker for the last eight months; her longtime friend and caretaker Virginia Jones; and many friends throughout the community. Her husband, Dr. Daniel L. Hartman, predeceased her.
Funeral arrangements, under the direction of the Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton, were private. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Doctors Without Borders USA, P.O.
