Julia Vance Carter, who had a home in Southampton and was on the board of the Southampton Historical Museum, died on July 23 at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital in Manhattan, following a three-year battle with pancreatic cancer. She was 61.
Ms. Carter attended Yale College and Columbia Law School, where she received her juris doctorate. Survivors said her most significant accomplishment was her unwavering love for her family.
Tom Edmonds, executive director of the Southampton Historical Museums and Research Center, said of Ms. Carter, “The Southampton Historical Museum lost an irreplaceable friend and generous supporter with the death of Julia Vance Carter. As a trustee until a few years ago, she gave unstintingly of her energy, creativity and knowledge to museum programs, entering the spirit of events whether she was manning the face-painting booth at the museum’s annual Harvest Day festivities, posing for its playful fundraising calendar, or offering her considerable expertise on more weighty matters facing the board.
Gracious, fun, warm and sincere, with a smile that lit up a room, she will be sorely missed by everyone at the museum who had the pleasure of working with her and by all her many friends in the village.”
She is survived by three children, Jennifer Carter Fleiss, Jacqueline Carter and Jordan Carter; and a granddaughter, Daniella Fleiss.
A memorial service was held at St. Andrew’s Dune Church in Southampton on July 26.
