Kathleen “Katie” Stoddard Lupia of East Quogue died at Southampton Hospital on Friday, May 1 following a valiant battle with cancer. She was 62.

Mrs. Lupia taught second grade in the Riverhead School District at Phillips Avenue School for 33 years, and was instrumental in establishing new programs for the school as well as creating and obtaining many educational grants.

She was a member of Phi Kappa Gamma, a group of female educational leaders residing on the East End.

She retired from teaching in 2002, and she and her husband traveled extensively thereafter, with Disney being at the top of the list.

According to loved ones, her battle with the disease was inspirational to those who knew her.

Mrs. Lupia is survived by her husband of 41 years, Benjamin W. Lupia, Jr.; a son, Benjamin Lupia and his wife Wendy of Hampton Bays; a sister, Patricia Weiss of Hampton Bays and Florida; two brothers, William Stoddard Jr. of North Babylon and Richard Stoddard Sr. of Connecticut; a granddaughter, Caitlyn; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A wake was held at the J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays on May 3 and 4. Monsignor Dennis Regan of St. Rosalie’s Roman Catholic Church in Hampton Bays conducted a prayer service at the funeral home on May 4. A funeral service was held at St. Rosalie’s Church on May 5; interment followed at Good Ground Cemetery in Hampton Bays.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73123-1718 or Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, 1275 York Avenue, New York, New York 10065 would be appreciated by the family.
