UPDATE: Thursday, February 9: Lidl Reopened

As predicted by store officials earlier this week, Lidl on Sunset Avenue in Westhampton Beach reopened on the morning of Thursday, February 9.

Original Story

Lidl, the discount grocer on Sunset Avenue in Westhampton Beach, is not closing for good. And if the roof repairs they’re undertaking go smoothly, the Germany-based small inventory store with rotating stock won’t be closed for long.

On Tuesday, February 7, Chandler Spivey, from Lidl’s public relations department, reported that the store expects to reopen on Thursday, February 9.

Social media sites began to buzz last week when a sign appeared on the door stating that the store would be closed for an “indefinite” period “due to unforeseen circumstances.”

Asked about the temporary closure on January 31, Spivey said the store shut down for repairs.

“Our team is working around the clock to make sure the store is ready for customers,” he wrote in response to an email inquiry, adding, “We look forward to reopening the store as soon as possible and continuing to serve our Westhampton Beach customers with our high-quality groceries and low prices.”

According to Brad Hammond, Westhampton Beach Village’s building and zoning administrator, a leak in a section of the building’s roof was more extensive than originally thought. He’s expecting to receive a full-bodied building permit application but said he was uncertain how involved the repair may be.

Lidl conducted a comprehensive remodeling after it took over the space previously occupied by Best Market in 2020, and opened in the spring of 2021.

Lidl bought Best Market stores in 2018; 24 of Best Market’s 28 stores were located on Long Island, and the Westhampton Beach site was Lidl’s 17th Long Island outlet when it opened. Now, Lidl has 24 locations on Long Island, with around 12,000 outlets in 21 countries.

The Mountain

Southampton Town officials, it must be said, are very much on point when it comes to affordable housing. It’s not just lip service: The town is doing its level best to begin to address the ongoing crisis that is making it harder for the town’s workforce to stay here, and more difficult for the town’s business community to fill positions. It became problematic a few years ago, but today it’s probably the biggest issue Town Hall faces. And it appears that all hands are on deck. The town’s voters also have done their part, approving a new Community Housing Fund ... by Editorial Board
