Every year, International Dark Skies Week (April 15 through 22) reminds us about the benefits of reducing light pollution in our communities.
Excessive and inappropriate outdoor lighting disrupts the natural rhythms of wildlife, has a negative impact on human health, wastes money and energy, and blocks our view of the beautiful night sky.
Southampton Town and Southampton Village have adopted Dark Sky legislation to protect our heritage and rural character, and to enable all of us to continue being inspired by a dark and sparkling night sky.
We urge everyone to walk out into your yard or neighborhood and assess your view. Are you part of the 83 percent of the world who no longer can see the stars? If so, review the guidelines for lighting, at southamptontownny.gov/darkskies, so that you can retrieve this natural resource.
Lights should be shielded, off when not in use and no brighter than needed for the task. Let’s make our homes and businesses night sky friendly.
