The long-anticipated auction of former U.S. Coast Guard housing off of Stewart Avenue in Westhampton, scheduled for August 21, has been postponed, yet again, by the federal General Services Administration, until September 6.
The site being auctioned features 14 acres that contains 24 duplexes, two single-family units and an office-workshop-residence. There’s a playground and open space areas, too.
The Town of Southampton made an offer on the property last year that it said the GSA rejected — the town had eyed the property for a possible affordable housing buildout.
Locals in the adjacent Hampton West neighborhood across from Stewart Avenue have expressed dismay and anger at the prospect of the town making another run at the site during the auction, whenever that might be.
A resident who lives near the USCG site told The Southampton Press over the weekend that they believed the “town should stay away — they need to keep their hands off this property, and we need to bring in the contractors.”
The resident, who was mowing their lawn and asked not to be identified, said the neighborhood already had issues with some residents not doing their part to keep the area from turning into “a s***hole.” The resident expressed hostility to any mention of federal Section 8 housing vouchers or any subsidized housing development in the tract, which is located near Gabreski Airport.
Inquiries sent to the GSA’s press office asking about the repeated rescheduling of the auction were not immediately returned. When it does take place, the opening bid is $5 million and would increase by increments of $100,000.
