Marjorie Burns, a lifelong resident of Sag Harbor whose family described her as a beautiful wife, mother and grandmother, died on January 11 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was 74.

She was born and raised in Sag Harbor to Winslow and Shirley Ruppel, along with her sisters, Mary Lou, Shirley and Barbara, and her brother, Winslow.

She was a 1968 graduate of Pierson High School. She attended SUNY Brockport. She then lived in Scotland while her husband was stationed in the U.S. Navy.

She worked at Apple Bank (formerly Sag Harbor Savings) for 30 years, always ready with a smile for all her customers.

She married John Burns, also of Sag Harbor. They were devoted to each other for almost 53 years, raising their two children, Andrea Benbenek (Anthony Benbenek) and Sean Burns (Maria Pencheva), both from Sag Harbor. She was a proud grandmother to Mackenzie and Jacob Benbenek, along with Calina, Lily and Ivy Burns, also of Sag Harbor.

Her devotion to her family was unending, her family said, describing her as spending as much time with her grandchildren as possible, baking cookies, making her “special jello,” going on adventures and trips, or simply reading and playing Beanie babies. She was the heart of her family, always available with love and guidance.

She loved to travel with her husband. They enjoyed traveling the world with family or friends and going on many cruises. She loved to take her grandchildren on adventures to local ponds and nature trails or carnivals and amusement parks. She was always ready to ride the roller coaster or the slide at a water park.

She was a member of American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Post No. 388.

She was also a lover of Bernese mountain dogs, and was often seen walking her giant dog around town.

Services were held at the Yardley and Pino Funeral Home on January 15 and The Old Whalers Church on January 16. Interment followed at Oakland Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to East End Hospice (eeh.org).

After many moons, the construction fence and its black drapes came down, and people could see their beloved General Store again.
