Mary Elizabeth (Betty) Falborn, nee Field, age 93, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 20th, 2020 at Vitas Inpatient Hospice in Rockledge, FL surrounded by her family.
She was born on November 3, 1926, in New York City, to Justin R. Field, from East Hampton, and the former Elizabeth Langan, from Ballybofey, County Donegal, Ireland. As a child her family had lived in NYC and East Hampton. Having attended school in both NYC and East Hampton, she graduated from Walton High School in NYC. Following graduation she worked for American Chain and Cable before moving to Western Union where she met her husband, Edward F. Falborn from Brooklyn, NY. They married on July 4, 1952, and settled in NYC where they raised their 5 children. Summers were spent at her parent’s summer home on Gardner’s Bay located on Gerard Drive in The Springs, East Hampton. Mrs. Falborn was proud to be the 9th generation of one of the early settlers of East Hampton, The Field family.
In 1972 they moved their family to Sag Harbor where Mrs. Falborn went back to work in banking. She worked in the same bank building on the corner of Main and Washington Streets for 4 different banks throughout her 26 year career in Sag Harbor. She retired in 1998 which enabled her to do some traveling with her husband. After the death of her husband in 2002 she spent winters in Florida, and summers at her home in Sag Harbor. Her hobbies included needlepoint, gardening, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. Some of her travels took her to Ireland, Italy, Germany, Bermuda, and extensively throughout the U.S.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her two brothers, Justin R Field, Jr., of Rivervale, NJ and William J Field, of Fishkill, NY. She is survived by her 5 children and their spouses, Edward F (Melissa) from Longmont, CO, Thomas J, from Merritt Island, FL and NYC, Robert J (Muriel) from Sag Harbor, Mary Tafoya (Craig ) from Merritt Island, FL, and John A (Debbie) from Merritt Island, FL. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and her beloved Australian Terrier, Phoebe.
Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there can only be a private viewing for immediate family at the Yardley-Pino Funeral Home in Sag Harbor, followed by a graveside service at Cedar Lawn Cemetery in East Hampton on May 9th.
A funeral memorial mass is planned for a later date for family and friends.
