Longtime Southampton summer resident Mary Ferrer died peacefully on Sunday, November 23, at her apartment in Manhattan.

Born Mary Schumacher in New York in 1912, she spent summers in Southampton with her parents and her sister, Alice. In 1938, she married Dr. Jose M. Ferrer and the couple maintained summer homes in Southampton until 1992.

Mrs. Ferrer was a member of the Bathing Corporation of Southampton, the Meadow Club, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and the Southampton Club. She was also a member of the Colony Club in Manhattan.

She served on the boards of the Spence-Chapin adoption agency and the Catholic Charities of New York. According to survivors, she was a woman of style, wit and keen intuition whose self-effacing grace and generosity enhanced the lives of all who knew her.

Predeceased by Dr. Ferrer, she is survived by her five children, their spouses, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be held on Friday, November 28, at 11 a.m. at St. Jean the Baptist Church at 184 E. 76th Street and Lexington Avenue in New York.

In lieu of flowers, donations to the Spence-Chapin Services of New York would be appreciated by the family
