Mary Gale Gilchrest, affectionately known as Gale, died peacefully surrounded by family at their home on February 1. She was 84.
Ms. Gilchrest was born August 17, 1936, in Nyack. She was the daughter of Homer and Adelaide Gilchrest.
After graduating from Colby College, Ms. Gilchrest went to work in New York City for John Blair Associates, and later Independent Media, selling radio air time to advertisers.
She fulfilled her life-long dream of moving to Southampton when she opened the Mole Hole Gift Shop on Jobs Lane in Southampton. Her expert buying eye provided the Mole Hole with some of the most unique and special gifts in the area. Ms. Gilchrest was later known as a fixture at Hildreth’s Home Goods in Southampton and the Watermill Bridge Club.
She is survived by her cousins James Feeney and his wife Louise and daughters Ellen and Colleen, Louis Feeney, Shane Gilchrest, Kelly Gilchrest Bloss, Scott Gilchrest, Keith Savoury and Shawn Savoury.
Her family asked that family and friends celebrate her life and not mourn her death. As was Ms. Gilchrest’s wish, she will be cremated at the Allen Funeral Home in Endicott, New York, and later, at a suitable time, she will be buried in the Gilchrest family plot at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack.
A memorial Mass will be said for Gale at her parish church, Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, 165 Hill Street, Southampton, on Tuesday, February 16, at 10 a.m.
