Dad's Red Leaves

Every year in mid-August, my dad had a ritual, with him and others, and it became more special in the late summer of 1992, his last summer, and two months prior to cancer taking him out too early in the game. Dad would anchor himself in the long outdoor lounge chair with an old-fashioned glass on the small table to his right, and my homemade Sinatra tapes singing to him from the grass. For Dad, not a man of Eastern thought, that was the perfect moment. I would walk up to him and sit beside him on the Sinatra grass ... 23 Sep 2024 by Staff Writer

A Rubber Stamp

If you walk down the memory lane of politics, in 2019, you will be reminded that Tommy John Schiavoni was a candidate for the New York State Senate seat held by moderate Republican Kenneth LaValle. Currently, the Southampton Town Democratic Committee is portraying Tommy John as a “common-sense” candidate. However, Tommy John showed no common sense when his campaign put out a mean-spirited letter attacking LaValle. To quote Tommy John, from Dan’s Papers, November 19, 2019: “I don’t plan on attacking him. I don’t believe in contentious elections.” Really? That letter was quickly retracted, but, of course, the negatives were ... by Staff Writer

A Good Plan

The Southampton Town Trustees should be commended for their plan to dredge sand from the inlets of the South Pond and Middle Pond and use it to rebuild an eroded beach [“Southampton Trustees To Rebuild Shinnecock Bay Beach Eroded by Sea Wall, But Are Uncertain of How Long It Will Last,” 27east.com, September 11]. The plan is similar to a project that the Town of Brookhaven implemented in 2017, when they dredged at the entrance of the Areskonk Creek and used the sand to fortify nearby Webby’s Beach, ensuring another generation of Webby sandcastles. Mother Nature had been choking Areskonk ... by Staff Writer

Breaking the Law

I encourage you to read the September 4 article in the New York Post titled “Southampton Mayor Ripped for Gutting Perks for Town (i.e., Village) Workers: Straw That Broke the Camel’s Back.” In that article, a representative for the mayor claimed, “The village has not broken the Taylor Law.” However, the Taylor Law, or the Public Employees’ Fair Employment Act, guarantees public employees the right to organize, unionize and engage in collective bargaining without fear of retaliation. Despite this, Mayor Bill Manger has repeatedly violated this fundamental law by retaliating against CSEA employees for their union activities, according to their ... by Staff Writer

It's About Mercy

Christians, as a whole, make up perhaps the largest voting demographic in the U.S., but they don’t tend to vote as a united bloc and, in fact, are a source of great division in our politics over the issues of abortion, gun control and immigration. I believe it is because we have not really taken to heart Jesus’s teaching when he quotes the prophet Hosea in saying, “I desire mercy, not sacrifice,” and we support politicians who lack this mindset. It has greatly contributed to this quagmire we are in as a country, where everyone has locked their mindset into ... by Staff Writer

Fighting for Us

As a resident who cares deeply about our local environment, I am grateful for Congressman Nick LaLota’s leadership in protecting Suffolk County’s natural resources and addressing climate change. As co-chairs of the Long Island Sound Caucus, Congressman LaLota (R-NY) and Congressman Joe Courtney (D-Connecticut) worked together to successfully pass a bill to reauthorize the Long Island Sound Program, securing vital funding for the Long Island Sound and the Peconic Estuary, ensuring these treasured waters are preserved for generations to come. LaLota has earned bipartisan support for his legislation to protect Plum Island, an irreplaceable environmental gem, and passed an amendment ... by Staff Writer
