Meredith Joan Platt Joyce of Southampton, formerly of Flushing, died March 7, 2020, in hospice care in Silver Spring, Maryland, surrounded by her family. She was 82.

Born on June 12, 1937, at Southampton Hospital to William Bangs Platt Jr. and Edith Margaret Guldi Platt, she married Thomas Walter Eeves Joyce Jr. on November 29, 1958. She first met him in early childhood, as her father (a graduate of Georgetown Law) and his father, Thomas Walter Eeves Joyce (a graduate of the Fordham University School of Law), became close friends while at Georgetown University. She graduated from Good Counsel College and earned a master’s degree in education from C.W. Post. Her career began as an educator and finished as an antique shop proprietor, having been the founder and manager of Another Time Antiques shop in the Village of Southampton for over 25 years; her husband joined her in the business when he retired.

Ms. Joyce was a devout Catholic and longtime parishioner of the Basilica Church of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary where she was married, and her mother, Edith Guldi Platt, played the organ for more than 40 years.

In 2014, she and her husband moved to the Riderwood Retirement Community in Silver Spring, Maryland, where they were also members of the Church of the Resurrection, but she always looked forward to being back in Southampton enjoying the sunshine.

Ms. Joyce was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Thomas Joyce, on July 6, 2018; and her brother, William Platt III, on November 20, 2011. She is survived by her sister, Emalie Feerick of Larchmont; her brothers, Harold Platt of Florida, Jonathan Platt of Hampton Bays and Richard Platt of Massachusetts; her sister, Elinor Hoar of Oklahoma; her daughter, Catherine Joyce Gates and husband Bret of Maryland; her son, Thomas W.E. Joyce III and wife Lori of Pennsylvania; and four grandchildren, Kevin Gates of Florida, Ryan Joyce and wife Melissa Butler of Virginia, Brendan Gates and wife Christie of South Carolina, and Kayla Joyce and fiancé Ryan Karzar of Maryland.

Memorial visitation will be held on Friday, March 13, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m., at O’Connell-Rothwell Funeral Home in Southampton.

A funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 14, at 9 a.m., at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton.

Memorial donations may be made to the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

The Hamptons International Film Festival typically takes up a lot of oxygen in the fall on the South Fork, but it’s worth celebrating a slightly smaller but just as vital event in late autumn: the Hamptons Doc Fest. Running this week for its 18th year, the festival of documentaries was founded by Jacqui Lofaro and has become an essential part of the region’s arts scene every year. It’s a 12-month undertaking for Lofaro and her staff, and the result is always a tantalizing buffet of outstanding filmmaking, not to mention unforgettable stories. Proceed With Caution

Overlay districts are a common zoning tool used by many municipalities. Southampton Town has used them to varying degrees of success — the aquifer protection overlay district has been a winner; a downtown overlay district in Hampton Bays less so — in various parts of the town. They essentially look at the existing zoning, then allow those rules governing what can be done on properties to be reconsidered if there’s a newer concern to be addressed. In a bid to clean up the process for creating more affordable housing, the Town Board is looking at a new overlay district that ... by Editorial Board

It’s back — the federal government’s push to expand offshore oil drilling. The waters off Long Island are not in the plan, as of now.
