Clean Campaign

I’m so proud of John Leonard. I’m so proud of being a Democrat. They ran a “clean” campaign and stuck to the facts and issues and not to character attacks. My takeaway: When you are not adequately qualified, a candidate and their party too often resort to personal mudslinging. My other takeaway: that the toxicity on the national level has infiltrated local politics as well. My hope has been, especially since Donald Trump, the sequel, that voters have become tired of character assassination and want to move forward with civility, mutual respect and a commitment to compromise in order to ... 25 Mar 2025 by Staff Writer

A Rat in the Coop

Because we have chickens, we have rats. When people who don’t have a farm tell me they are getting chickens, I try to warn them. That’s nice, I say. But be ready for some rats. You might want to consider getting a terrier. This is a messy lifestyle, and your Maltese won’t be able to manage it alone, if at all. As rats are associated with at least a few plagues, cities rightly fear them. In the countryside, we do our part to control them. Each night, when we go to close the coops, there is a hunt. We once ... by Marilee Foster

Feeling the Cuts

Knowing the tone of conversation in Hampton Bays, I suspect many voted the current federal administration in. As the Department of Education is dismantled, federal tax dollars will disappear. I hope they all show up to vote the school budgets down, because my bet is that cutting them to fit what’s left won’t happen. Using 2023-24 numbers, $1,275,363 is at risk. Neither higher taxes nor poorer services for children is a desirable outcome. Congratulations to the Republicans. Well done. Amy Paradise Hampton Bays 24 Mar 2025 by Staff Writer

Quiet Efficiency

An enthusiastic and well-deserved thank you for the efforts of so many first responders in our community, as well as dozens of communities throughout Suffolk County and beyond, during our recent serious brush fire, scarily reminiscent of our Pine Barrens fire some 30 years ago [“Fast Response Succeeds in Bringing Fast-Moving Westhampton Pines Fire Under Control,” 27east.com, March 12]. I have always appreciated the quiet efficiency of our firefighters here in Quogue from my years as our mayor: Men and women working pro bono so that those of us living here can rest assured that their homes and personal safety ... by Staff Writer

Work Together

With the 2025 Southampton Town election petition season well underway, I am officially announcing my candidacy for election to the Southampton Town Board of Trustees. Thanks to all the people I have met with who have taken the time to discuss the issues and problems ahead of us. During my time on the Board of Trustees, I have worked to finalize plans to renovate the south end parking lot of Lake Agawam and collaborated with town officials and other stakeholders to secure the Community Preservation Fund revenue to complete the project. Also, during my short tenure, we finalized a historic ... by Staff Writer

Fragile System

Thank you, Andrew Messinger. The eighth paragraph of the “Ramble” article [“The March Garden Ramble,” Hampton Gardener, Residence, 27east.com, March 22] is most important for understanding the connections to the world of our ecosystem. If poison is used, other parts of the system are afflicted. Recently, a dead owl was found by a friend’s family. The bird was buried. Elaine McKay Sag Harbor The paragraph in question: “Now, consider the alternate outcome if I had been using a poison to kill voles. The owl may have eaten one or two, ingested the poisoned vole and probably died from being poisoned. ... by Staff Writer

Grateful

As president of the Hampton West Estates Residents Association, I would like to sincerely thank all of those individuals who took part in containing the recent Pine Barrens fire in our neighborhood [“Fast Response Succeeds in Bringing Fast-Moving Westhampton Pines Fire Under Control,” 27east.com, March 12]. It brought back those rather upsetting memories of fires in 1995, and I must say that the emergency services were absolutely first rate and quickly on top of the situation. I’d also like to thank those local neighborhood residents who used our resident Facebook page to disseminate information and heeded our request to state ... by Staff Writer
