Nellie (Nell) Maran died peacefully at her home in Southampton on October 28. She had just celebrated her 101st birthday on October 15.
She was always thankful for her good health and long life.
She was born in Southold to Anna and Antonin Struk. She grew up in Bridgehampton with her parents and her 10 siblings. She often spoke of her parents’ farm being hard work. She and her siblings were expected to help whenever they were not in school.
After she retired from the New York Telephone Company in 1985, she spent much of her time tending to her gardens. She was named an honorary member of the Olde Towne Garden Club after her many years of active membership in that group. She was most proud of her award-winning roses and flower arrangements. She also volunteered at the Southampton Hospital Thrift Shop and at Human Resources of the Hamptons. She was a member of the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary.
She was a great lover of animals. She always fed stray cats and worried about animals and birds going hungry. She didn’t even mind when deer wandered onto her property and nibbled on her bushes and plants. She always said, “Deer have to eat, too.”
She was predeceased by her mother and father; and her husband Donald Maran. She is survived by her stepdaughters, Donna Liehr (Bob) and Faye Andreasen (John); five step-grandchildren, eight step-great grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild; her brother Dan; and many nieces and nephews. She was very appreciative of her full-time caregiver of 11 years, Aira Najdek, and her part-time caregiver, Tanya Montes. They became part of the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Heart of the Hamptons (heartofthehamptons.org) or a charity of one’s choice.
Visitation will be held on Monday, November 4, from 9:30-10:30 a.m., with a prayer service beginning at 10:30 a.m., at O’Connell-Rothwell Funeral Home in Southampton. Interment will follow at Sacred Hearts Cemetery in Southampton.
