At our April 25 meeting, Mayor Jesse Warren introduced a resolution regarding the Southampton Village elected officials’ post-service benefits. We, the Southampton Village Board of Trustees, agree that this is an important topic that should be discussed fully and openly.
In no way was our decision to delay voting on the mayor’s resolution an indication of anything except our sense that the mayor was precipitous in his desire to introduce a resolution and have it voted on at the same meeting without any study or comparison to our surrounding villages.
The editorial in The Southampton Press last week [“On Deaf Ears,” May 4] was spot on when it stated, “Whether to cancel village taxpayer-funded health insurance outright for future former board members is an issue that merits lengthy examination and debate. There is a lot to consider, and it is far from the simple matter the mayor makes it out to be.”
The board has invited representatives from the Budget and Finance Committee and the Planning Commission to present on mayor and trustee compensation and benefits at the public meeting to be held on Thursday, May 11, at 6 p.m. We look forward to hearing their analysis and findings, receiving public input, and then taking action to make the recommended changes.
