Not a Penny Spent

Last year, $1 million was approved to spend on rehabilitating our town’s National Register Landmark building, the Ellis Squires House. The board and the Community Preservation Fund have yet to spend a penny.

At the board meeting yesterday, when I spoke up about the recent vandalism, I was given supremely uninterested responses: “We will look into it.”

I implore any of those residents who claim interest in our culture and history to speak up, write the board, make noise.

Neighbors on Newtown Road who are tired of the appearance, step up and complain. If there are carpenters or builders with interest and expertise in old building restoration who would work in the building, please write or contact the board. We likely could use volunteer help, too. Lately, all anyone says about volunteerism is, “Oh, insurance forbids it,” but we should try.
