Consider this a public thank you to Charles McArdle, Southampton Town highway superintendent. Mr. McArdle is one of very few elected officials to actually work for the people who elected him and not for an out-of-town, private corporation that has decimated the Pine Barrens under which flows our drinking water.
Discovery Land has bamboozled and/or confused most of our elected officials, to say nothing of the unelected Planning Board.
Now, despite the fact that on their original planning documents Spinney Road is clearly labeled as a town road and not a dirt path, as Jessica Insalaco of Discovery has decreed [“Discovery Land Sparring With Southampton Highway Superintendent Over Rights to Dirt Road Through East Quogue Golf Course,” 27east.com, April 23], they have decided that they want that piece of property and have simply declared it abandoned. In their arrogance, they installed gates at the end of Spinney Road, with a gate house and a cobblestone curb preventing any vehicles from crossing over. Hikers have been harassed by their security guards while attempting to access the public road.
I have lived on Spinney Road for over 30 years, and I know full well that many people hike those trails and would continue to use that road to access the lands not owned by Discovery Land. However, our “good neighbors” have made it clear that the local residents are not welcome on that land.
There is a house on Spinney Road that no one has lived in for at least 25 years. I have not seen anyone go in or out in many years. Using Discovery Land’s logic and tactics, I plan to take it over. You are all welcome to come visit!
