The Shinnecock Nation’s drum beating of being a “good neighbor” is sounding off beat.
Do good neighbors promise to give information to the Southampton Town Board on the construction of their travel plaza in Westwoods, then never deliver on the promise? Do good neighbors lie about construction details that other tribal members have already confirmed? Does a good neighbor distort facts regarding buffer zones on Quail Run to wrongfully put the blame on the town for the lack of a buffer zone?
The rhetoric from the nation on how they are protecting the Earth for the seventh generation is wearing thin when their actions reflect the actions of the developers they criticize. If the nation truly believes they are in the right to ignore all zoning regulations on their Westwoods property, they should embrace a court decision that puts that question to rest.
When the courts decide on the Nation’s legal rights to develop Westwoods, we can then achieve a harmonious drumbeat and support development or preservation of Westwoods.
