John Neely’s rebuttal [“Falsehoods,” Letters, April 10] is so full of misstatements that if anyone is interested, they should reread my comments for themselves.
Point one: A declared war is not the threshold for the utility of the Alien Enemies Act. The other specifically mentioned triggers are “incursion or invasion,” which obviously do qualify.
I will briefly say that the legalities of the Alien Enemies Act have been confirmed by our highest court. The U.S. Supreme Court has grown weary of the overly active district courts led by liberal judges making rulings over which they mistakenly claim national jurisdiction. The Democrats and their progressive minions seek out favorable judges to obstruct legitimate presidential business using parochial courts to interfere with the legitimate national interests of the executive branch. This ankle-biting has been just another example of the resistance to the election of Donald Trump.
Mr. Neely’s claim that the preponderance of violent behavior is owned by Trump supporters is unsupported, if the January 6 demonstration is set aside. There is plenty to debate about that.
I say the anger comes largely from progressives in word and deed. The sad truth is, Democrats give their blessing all too easily to violence, excusing it as free expression. That is exactly what we have seen coming from our radicalized universities and in front of Jewish houses of worship and businesses. We have seen it picketing Supreme Court justices at their residences. It had been on full display during the Black Lives Matter riots in our cities that left a legacy of lawlessness in our streets and left our police today mostly observing crime and thuggery, unable to prosecute it.
Are you aware that, in a recent poll, large percentages of Democrats wish Trump had died from the failed assassination attempt? Agree or not, this hatred is not what you get from MAGA, who love the country just as progressives will remind us of how evil we are.
The hatred of Elon Musk and the attacks on Tesla vehicles and dealerships is very different from the right to free expression. It is political violence. This anger has infected too many Democrats who appear to have no tolerance for the pursuit of an “America First” agenda. The singular purpose of Democrats is an open resistance to all things Trump, and this continues to define them having nothing positive to offer as an alternative.
For what it’s worth, Trump will be remembered, if he lives out his term, as the most consequential man of our times.
