VIEWPOINT: The Supreme Court Case That Could Radically Change Elections

By Peter Mayer It is close to impossible for the average American to follow the decisions coming out of the Supreme Court of the United States. However, certain matters that come before the court may have a direct impact on the functioning of our democratic form of government, a concept that should be of universal interest. On December 7, 2022, arguments were heard by the Supreme Court in a case called Moore v. Harper. The central issue was the question as to whether state legislatures should have independent power, not subject to any judicial review by state courts, to set ... 7 Apr 2025 by Peter Mayer

Falsehoods

In his latest letter to these pages, reader Ed Surgan defends the deportation and imprisonment of people who are lawful residents of the country [“Messy Business,” Letters, March 27]. All this with zero due process. In one case, the person whom the administration imprisoned was detained because of “a clerical error.” Nevertheless, the Donald Trump Justice Department has refused a judge’s order to bring him back to his family. Mr. Surgan states that the Alien Enemies Act gives the president unlimited power to deport people. This is the same law that was used to imprison Japanese Americans during World War ... by Staff Writer

More Donations

I recently wrote a letter to these pages thanking various community members and businesses for their generous support during our recent brush fires [“Behind the Scenes,” Letters, March 13]. Since then, we have received more donations and communications that I would like to acknowledge now. The Home Depot donated a pallet of water. Joyce Saliani and the Hartman family dropped off delicious homemade treats. And an anonymous donor left a case of Gatorade. The staff and residents of the Westhampton House left a kind note and some cookies. Peoples Arc of Westhampton Beach and the owners of Westhampton Beach Florist ... by Staff Writer

House of Cards

I nodded my head along to Barbara Ring’s recent Letter to the Editor [“Manhattan Calling,” Letters, April 3] and enjoyed it, as I usually do. However, Barbara got one thing wrong, or, rather, her source did: We are not stuck with John Leonard after all. Gordon Herr has frantically been having meetings to discuss John Leonard’s replacement, signaling that this race was too much for John Leonard. The chair of the Southampton Democratic Committee and his henchwoman, unbeknownst to the committee, began having closed-door meetings with previously screened candidates to quickly find a replacement. Thank the gods, they got someone. ... by Staff Writer

Southampton Board of Education Finalizes 2025-26 Budget

Come May 20, residents of the Southampton School District will vote on whether to approve the proposed 2025-26 budget, which will grow the tax levy by 3.02 percent, or nearly $1.9 million, and potentially eliminate seven positions left empty by retirements, resignations and vacancies. “We are considering not rehiring those positions to ensure that we meet the budget and that we save dollars,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Fatima Morrell said, “and we save the taxpayer dollars.” The Board of Education unanimously adopted the $82.2 million spending plan on Tuesday night, April 2. It marks a 2.88 percent, or just under ... by Michelle Trauring
