The Shinnecock Tribe’s Graves Protection Society has given Town Attorney Jim Burke a list of properties in the Shinnecock Hills to be preserved using funds from the Community Preservation Fund. Among these is 301 Montauk Highway, where a stop-work order had been issued.
But it appears that, as of May 10, there was ongoing construction (or preparation for construction) at that site. Soil has been dropped off recently.
If the town is really serious about preserving what is left of the land where the Shinnecock Nation’s ancestors buried their dead — land that the real estate industry is otherwise ready to exploit — they would pay strict attention to what is happening.
