An unidentified man was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital early Thursday afternoon, July 22, after being struck by a westbound Long Island Rail Road train in Bridgehampton.
Police said the man had been walking on the tracks between Lumber Lane and the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike shortly before noon when he was struck by the train, which was slowing down as it approached the station.
Emergency workers said the man was able to walk to the Bridgehampton-Sag Harbor Turnpike to seek aid. Southampton Town Police said although the man was airlifted, he did not appear to have life-threatening injuries.
A Suffolk County Police medevac helicopter landed on the ball field next to the Bridgehampton Firehouse on School Street to take the victim to Stony Brook.
The train remained stopped on the tracks for more than an hour after the accident as LIRR workers and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority Police investigated. Passengers were transferred to a bus.
The MTA police had no additional information to report, including the identity of the victim as of Friday afternoon.
