Phyllis Lynn Katz of Sag Harbor died on November 9 after a very long illness. She was 69.
Ms. Katz was born on May 11, 1951 in Greenport. In the 1980’s, she had a store on Main Street in Sag Harbor named “Phyllis and Samantha.” She later became a real estate agent. Her daughter, Samantha (Sam) was the true sunshine of her life, her family said. Sam is married to Jordan Cohen and has two children — a son Dylan and a daughter Charlotte (Charlie.) Phyllis’s fervent wish was to spend more time with her grandchildren, her family said.
Ms. Katz grew up in Sag Harbor and always considered it home. As a young girl, she loved helping her grandmother in the store, The Fil-Net Shoppe, which was owned by her grandmother, Nettie Rosenstein. The Fil-Net Shoppe later became known as The Trude Shoppe, owned by Ms. Katz’s mother, Gertrude Katz.
Ms. Katz loved knowing the people in her community and was always happy to lend an ear to people who she saw in everyday life, her family recalled, noting that what she loved most was having the whole family together. She will be sorely missing at the Thanksgiving table, they said.
Ms. Katz was predeceased by her father, Donald Katz. In addition to her daughter Sam Cohen and Sam’s family, she is survived by her mother, Gertrude Katz; her siblings Susan Leavitt (Alan), Jane Levy (Alan), Hank Katz; her sister-in-law Jayne Maslin; and many nieces and nephews.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Temple Adas Israel Building Fund, P.O. Box 1378 Sag Harbor, NY 11963, earmarked “in memory of Phyllis Katz.”
