I am a lifelong Democrat who recently tried to get involved with the Southampton Town Democratic Committee. Unfortunately, my attempt ended with Chairperson Gordon Herr telling me to “go vote Republican.” I was shocked and disappointed by the experience.
I was also disappointed by the results of the recent Southampton Town special election. This should have been an easy win for Democrats, especially considering that, in the last special election, the Democratic candidate won with 62 percent of the vote. Instead, we lost, badly.
After reflecting on both my personal experience and our recent local and national setbacks, I said to myself: Gordon needs to pick up the phone and call former Mayor Jesse Warren. Bring him out of retirement.
Jesse has a reputation for fighting for the kinds of projects most residents care about. He stands up to special interests. He’s loyal, he’s forward-thinking, and, perhaps most importantly, he inspires people to get involved.
If the Southampton Town Democratic Committee were to nominate Jesse, I’m sure he would attract younger people, energize the base, and actually get people like myself out there volunteering again to support Democrats this November.
Think about it, Gordon. What do you have to lose?
