The Pierson girls cross country team defeated Mattituck, 23-32, at Mashashimuet Park on October 17 to finish in a three-way tie for the League VIII title with both Mattituck and Port Jefferson.
Pierson lost to Port Jeff earlier this season, but Port Jeff had lost to Mattituck. The Whalers went ahead and swept the top three spots of the race to defeat Mattituck. Josie Mott won the race in 17:07, Sara O’Brien placed second in 17:19 and Greylynn Guyer placed third in 17:20.
“Sara and Greylynn did an excellent job staying with [Mattituck’s Georgia Buckley] throughout the entire race and then making their move,” head coach Yani Cuesta said. “Josie led the entire way staying well in front of the entire pack. It was such a great race to watch.”
Due to the three-way tie, all three teams competed in the Division IV Championship race at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park on Tuesday, results of which occurred too late to appear in this week’s edition of The Express. The Section XI Championships, or state qualifier, is back at Sunken Meadow on November 3. The Pierson girls placed sixth in the state last season.
