The Pierson girls cross country team placed second in Division IV at the Division Championships at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park on October 24. They finished 16th overall among 41 teams in the county.
The Whalers’ second place finish, with 61 points, put them only behind Bayport-Blue Point and its 28 points. But they finished well ahead of both of their League VIII competitors, Mattituck (76 points) and Port Jefferson (95 points), with whom they shared the league title.
Leading the way last week was sophomore Sara O’Brien, who finished fifth in the division in 21:45.70. Greylynn Guyer, a junior, finished ninth in the division in 21:59.50. Josie Mott, an eighth-grader, finished 12th in 22:12.70, sophomore Bennett Greene finished 19th in 23:40.80, eighth-grader Maggie Greenwald finished 26th in 24:51.50 and junior Marissa Walter finished 33rd in 30:33.10.
Mott, O’Brien and Guyer were each recognized as All-League First Team runners last week. Greenwald earned All-League Second Team honors.
The Pierson boys cross country team competed in the team qualifier race at Divisions last week. Senior Justin Gardiner led the way again for the Whalers by crossing the finish line in 17:58.70, good enough for seventh place in the county. Junior Edmar Gonzales-Nateras was next in for the Whalers at 19:11.30, followed by senior Chad Federico who finished in 19:57.40, freshman Ben Kriegsman who finished in 20:57.10 and junior David Kriegsman who finished in 21:02.
Both Pierson boys and girls will be at the Section XI Championships, also known as the state qualifier, this Friday, November 3, back at Sunken Meadow.
