The Pierson field hockey team won its eighth consecutive Suffolk County Class C Championship this fall, but then lost in the Long Island Championship on a controversial call when Meredith Spolarich’s goal with under a minute remaining was deemed no goal by an official.
What wasn’t controversial was the overall play of the field hockey team and it has the postseason accolades to back that up.
Spolarich, who scored a hat trick in the Whalers’ county championship win over Greenport/Southold, earned All-State honors, was named to Newsday’s All-Long Island Team, All-Tournament team and a member to the Suffolk County Field Hockey Coaches Association Senior All-Star Team. She was also one of six in the county to earn the Exceptional Senior Award, which is based on field hockey awards, honors and participation as well as scholastic awards, scholarship, achievements and honors and any other extracurricular activities and community service.
Mia Gangemi was an All-County Honorable Mention and All-Tournament, while Eleana Merola and Tahnie Sullivan were All-Classification. Cali Wilson earned an All-Classification Goalie Award. Eva McKelvey was named All-Division and Lily Perello was given the team’s Unsung Hero Award. Maddie Cohen was named All-Tournament as well.
After winning its fourth straight Suffolk County Class D title, the Pierson girls cross country team placed sixth at the New York State Championships, its best performance at the state level. Josephine Mott became a welcomed addition to the team this fall and earned All-State, All-County, All-Division and All-League honors. Sara O’Brien and Greylynn Guyer were both All-County, All-Division and All-League and Maggie Greenwald was All-County.
Justin Gardiner, for the second year in a row, qualified for the New York State Championships and represented the Pierson boys cross country team there, where he finished 26th overall in the state. He was All-County, All-Division and All-League. Coleman Dee was All-Division and All-League, while Chad Federico and Griffin Greene were All-League.
The Pierson/Bridgehampton boys soccer team went 8-5-3 in a competitive League V and was given the Suffolk County Class C outright, but lost, 2-0, to eventual state champion Haldane in the Class C Regional Finals. Halsey Burton and Javi Tubatan were both named All-Conference, while Brandon Guanga and Anthony Ponzini were named All-League. Sawyer Davey was Academic All-County.
Jocelyn Prieto was named All-League for the East Hampton/Pierson girls soccer team, and both Nicole Velez and Skye Tanzmann earned All-County Academic honors, being among the top 12 highest scholastic achieving students in the county.
The Pierson/Bridgehampton girls volleyball team had a nice bounce-back season, qualifying for the Suffolk County Class C playoffs, where it lost in the first round to top seed Mattituck. Grace Flanagan was named All-Classification and to the All-County Tournament team. Ashley Weatherwax was also named All-Classification, while Sadie Lattanzio, Helena Kolhoff and Finn Goodale were named All-League, with Goodale earning All-County Academic honors.
Pierson’s Maya Molin, who finished fourth in the Division IV Tournament, was the lone East Hampton girls tennis representative at the county tournament. She earned All-County honors.
Jane Brierley led the East Hampton/Pierson girls swim team this fall. She earned All-Federation and All-State honors in the 100-yard breaststroke, in which she also was an All-American Consideration. Hatch earned All-State honors in the 100-yard backstroke. Brierley was also All-Long Island and All-County in the 100 breast and All-County and All-League III in the 100-yard butterfly. Hatch was All-County in the 100 back and All-League III in the 50-yard freestyle. Brierley and Hatch also swam together on the 200-medley relay team along with Ava Castillo and Lily Griffin that earned All-Long Island, All-County and All-League III honors.
Griffin was All-League III in the 100 and 50 free, Castillo was All-League III in the 100 fly and Maddie Elflein earned All-League III honors in the 100 back. Hatch, Alyssa Brabant, Lizzy Daniels and Lylah Metz were All-League III in the 400 free relay.
In its first season back in Division III since 2011, the East Hampton/Pierson football team finished the season 2-6. Finn Byrnes was the team’s lone All-County selection, while Charlie Corwin was First Team All-Division. Will Darrell, Danny Lester and Richie Maio were Second Team All-Division.
