Ponquogue Bridge and Dune Road are currently closed due to flooding, but are expected to reopen once the tide goes out, according to Southampton Town Highway Superintendent Charles McArdle.
“It’s flooded pretty bad by the Coast Guard Station, so you can’t get over Ponquogue Bridge,” he said on Friday morning. “I know the fire department is helping people if they have to get off Dune Road.”
Abnormally high tides combined with the surge from Thursday night’s storm caused unprecedented flooding along parts of the South Shore, including the Shinnecock Canal, where the water overtopped the canal locks, and Three Mile Harbor Marina in Springs. While temperature are in the 50s this morning, they are expected to plummet into the teens this evening.
“You should be looking at Flying Point, too — The Cut, as they call it — it’s just a straight ocean right now,” McArdle said. “I guess the big issue’s gonna be the next round of high tide and the temperature’s gonna drop pretty bad.”
