Westhampton Beach Golf Falls to Northport in County Semifinals

The Westhampton Beach golf team, which seemed destined to win just about every title it could this season, fell a bit short of that goal. The Hurricanes won the League VIII title, a Conference IV title, and the Sebonack Challenge. But facing No. 4 Northport in the county semifinals of the Section XI Team Championships at Pine Hills Golf and Country Club in Manorville on Monday morning, the top seed ’Canes lost, 6-3, and 193-202 in team stroke total. A 202 team score is nothing shabby, but it was the highest score the ’Canes put up all season. A somber ... by Drew Budd

Hampton Bays Defeats Port Jeff Capping Solid Return to Varsity Football

The Hampton Bays football team defeated Port Jefferson, 48-27, at home on Friday night to wrap up its first varsity season in two years with a respectable 3-5 record. Three wins might not seem like much, but considering where the program was entering the season, having been relegated to a junior varsity-only season the past two years, it’s an accomplishment. The Baymen actually just missed out on the playoffs, finishing ninth behind the eighth and final seed Greenport/Mattituck/Southold, which had 15 more power points, 100.20-85.95. Hampton Bays head coach Sean Gil agreed that it was certainly an accomplishment, and added ... by Drew Budd

Southampton Football Forfeits Its Final Game of the Season, Future of Program Remains Uncertain

For the second straight week, the Southampton football team had no choice but to forfeit a game due to not having enough players. This time, it came when the Mariners were supposed to honor their own seniors in their eighth and final game of the season on their home turf against Center Moriches on Friday night. Southampton forfeited a game the week prior on October 25 at Shoreham-Wading River due to the same reasons, a night in which the Wildcats had their Senior Night and other festivities planned. But Southampton Athletic Director Darren Phillips had indicated that he would not ... by Drew Budd

You Can Come Back Again

The East Hampton football team, for a lack of better words, was dead in the water seven years ago. Despite making the playoffs in the two years prior, participation numbers had dwindled so much for the program that it had just a junior varsity team in 2014. The lowest point in the program came in 2017, when the Bonackers didn’t field a varsity or JV team at all. But in 2018 and 2019, East Hampton had brought its JV programs back. With no fall season in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Suffolk County did bring back a shortened football ... by Drew Budd

Voters Approve Water Quality Proposals, Abortion Protections

Suffolk County voters have overwhelmingly approved a new water quality improvement program that will create a new one-eighth-percent sales tax to fund upgrades to municipal sewer systems and the replacement of hundreds of thousands of outdated septic systems. More than 71 percent of those who marked a vote for what was Proposition 2 on Suffolk County ballots supported the measure. The new 0.125-percent tax will go into effect in 2025, with the funds becoming available for use in 2026. Sales tax in Suffolk will now be 8.75 percent. The new tax is expected to generate some $47 million in its ... by Michael Wright
