Ralph Esposito of Hampton Bays died on March 10. He was 84.

Born in East New York, Brooklyn, on May 23, 1937, he graduated from John Adams High School in 1955 and soon after enrolled in the U.S. Army. He was stationed in Alaska from 1956–1958, during which time he learned electronics. That knowledge led him to be a television repairman.

Upon his release from the Army, he worked simultaneously as a repairman and as a bricklayer for his father’s construction company. It was during that time that he met his future wife, Lorraine. They married on June 19, 1960, and resided in East New York, Brooklyn, where their children, Rosemary, Anthony and Michael were born.

In 1966, they moved to their permanent residence in Hampton Bays. During this time, his electronic skills, along with further schooling, allowed him to work at Grumman during the Vietnam War.

He joined the Southampton Village Police Department in the early 1970s and retired with the rank of sergeant in 1995. He and his wife owned the 7-Eleven store in Westhampton Beach for a few years as well.

In his retirement, Esposito enjoyed woodworking and the fine detail of bird carving. These creations earned him numerous blue ribbons in various competitions.

He is survived by his devoted wife Lorraine; daughter Rosemary (Robert) also of Hampton Bays; sons Anthony of Spotsylvania, Virginia, and Michael (Therese) of Clinton, Connecticut; his grandchildren Briella, Julian, Marcel, Michael, Aidan and Katerina; three great-grandchildren, Jace, Wyatt and Willem; and his sister, Frances, of Massapequa.

Under Attack

Democracy is under attack, and calling out the shifty, shady ways political parties are taking choice away from voters is essential. It’s very much an issue at the national level, for so many reasons. Not least of which, the House of Representatives — with the full support of Republicans, including 1st District U.S. Representative Nick LaLota — approved a measure last week called the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, or the SAVE Act, which would make it much harder for any American to register to vote. Seeking to weed out ballots cast by noncitizens — something that happens so rarely ... by Editorial Board
