Kudos again to The Express News Group for bringing to its readership’s attention the urgent issue of climate change [“The Heat Is On,” Editorial, August 1].

The concluding paragraph urges action: “Let’s start to truly feel the heat, start to understand the rising alarm that must come with rising global temperatures, and stop thinking we have all the time in the world to address our worsening conditions.”

I have the perfect person who can help us “understand the rising alarm” of climate change. His name is John Avlon, and he is our district’s 2024 Democratic candidate for Congress.

Mr. Avlon ably covered the issue of climate change when he was an analyst for CNN. In several segments of his “Reality Check” segment, he reviewed the origins of the scientific understanding of climate change, and how both political parties understood climate change is a problem to be addressed.

Unfortunately, that consensus was undermined by disinformation propagated by the fossil fuel industry and its allies, which has gotten us to a place where the Republican candidate for president calls climate change a “hoax.”

John Avlon is an expert communicator. I look forward to him utilizing that skill to forge a consensus among colleagues, constituents and all stakeholders to, as he said on CNN, “harness the power of science” to solve the climate crisis. With John in Congress, we can proceed with the not-too-late-yet journey of keeping this planet sustainable for our children, grandchildren and future generations.
