Long Overdue

To recognize and celebrate the anniversary of the Shinnecock Nation gaining federal recognition as a Native American tribe in 2010, the Southampton Town Board voted in February to declare October 1 “Shinnecock Heritage Day” in the town. Southampton Town Council member Michael Iasilli introduced the resolution, which the board adopted unanimously. The resolution noted an intent to “engender greater collaboration” between the town and the sovereign nation. Bryan Polite, then-chairman of the Shinnecock Council of Trustees, remarked during that February meeting that this is an important step forward in education and bridging the gap between the nation and neighbors. Paying the Bill

Nothing energizes the voting public like a proposed tax hike — and in both Southampton and East Hampton towns, sizable hikes are going to be proposed this fall, which likely will bring an outcry. It was a historic day. An end of an era. “A momentous event,” as Kathryn Szoka, one of the owners of Canio’s Books, put it as she addressed the crowd that had gathered to help her and her partner, Maryann Calendrille, remove the sign that hung over the shop they have run for the past 25 years. Whatever euphemism one prefers, it was simply a sad day for Sag Harbor. The shop’s owners have vowed to carry on the business and its cultural activities — perhaps as a pop-up for now, utilizing historic or public spaces in the village — ... by Editorial Board

Woman Charged With Grand Larceny in Jewelry Theft

Westhampton Beach Police, with the help of the Suffolk County District Attorney’s office and the NYPD, arrested Derly Herrera, 46, of Queens Village and charged her with second degree grand larceny related to the theft of more than $200,000 worth of jewelry from a vendor at an art show on the Great Lawn in Westhampton Beach over Labor Day weekend.
