Richard Spitz, formerly of Sag Harbor, died on March 18 in Los Angeles. He was 81.

Spitz was born in Southampton, New York, on August 11, 1941.

He was a graduate of Pierson High School and RCA Technical Institute in New York City, where he received an associate’s degree. He worked as an electrical engineer for 49 years at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, in the Collider-Accelerator Department, retiring in 2021.

For 11 years, Spitz also managed Spitz’s Furniture & Appliance Store on Main Street in Sag Harbor; a family business first started by his grandfather, Herman Spitz, in 1903 and later managed by his father, Arthur Spitz, and mother, Louise Spitz.

Throughout his life, Spitz was actively involved in racing, first motocross and later with the Porsche Club of America. He was an avid car enthusiast, often exhibiting either his Tesla Model S or Model 3 at local car shows.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Elizabeth Spitz of Los Angeles; his son, Steven Spitz of Los Angeles; his daughter, Yvette Curran of Riverhead; and his granddaughter, Sharda Spitz of Los Angeles.
