Robert Hauben, M.D, of Southampton and Estero, Florida, died on Sunday, March 19, 2017, from complications following a heart attack. He was 84.
Dr. Hauben, known as Bob, was born in Brooklyn in 1932 to Saul and Hilda Hauben. He graduated from Brooklyn Tech High School, and went on to graduate from Princeton University in 1954. He later attended medical school at the University of Paris and the University of Amsterdam. While in Amsterdam, he married his first wife, Adrienne Van Huystee, and later personally delivered his daughter, Chana.
He returned to the United States and studied psychiatry under Anna Freud at the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas. He later helped to found an international university in Luxembourg and Lugano, Switzerland.
In 1979, he moved to Washington, D.C., to work for the U.S. Department of State. In 1980, he traveled to Wiesbaden, Germany, as part of the team of psychiatrists sent to meet the 52 American hostages released from Iran. He was next assigned as a psychiatrist for State Department employees living in South America.
Dr. Hauben met Lillian Petrillo in 1984 while vacationing in Curacao. They married the following year and settled in Southampton in 1987. He worked as a psychiatrist at Maryhaven in Riverhead and also maintained a private practice until his retirement in 2008.
A man of many interests, Dr. Hauben spoke Dutch, French and Italian. He traveled widely, gardened enthusiastically and had a keen appreciation for good food and wine. He loved spending time with his family and his many dogs. He was an avid artist, and he won prizes for his pencil drawings at juried art shows in Bonita Springs, Florida.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian; children, Marc, Chana and Molly; and grandchildren, Drew and Sarah.
