Roy Antonio Jones III

Roy Antonio Jones III of the Shinnecock Indian Nation died at home on August 1. Affectionately known as “Roy Boy,” Julio, Rico Suave, Coconut, Bruce Leroy, and RJ, as he was called by his grandfather, he was 16 months old.

Born March 18, 2009, at Southampton Hospital to Vanessa and Roy Jones II, he was a bright and happy little boy, family said. He loved to swing, drive his Little Tikes car, play outside, and give kisses.

His mother said this week she enjoyed watching him learn new things every day. There was so much love when you looked in his eyes, family members said, adding that his smile could heal the worst broken heart and he could make you fall in love with just one hug; he was truly one of a kind.

Roy is survived by his mother, Vanessa Jones; father, Roy Jones Jr. II,; and his stepmother, Monique Mayo; an older sister, Amiya Aliyah Jones; an older brother, Roy Armani Jones; two grandmothers, Tina Zilnicki and Marie Antoinette Jones; two grandfathers, Daniel S. Collins Sr. and Roy Antonio Paige; two great-grandmothers, Hope Buelna Edythe Gregoire and Gloria Paige; and a great-grandfather Avery Dennis Sr.

He is also survived by five uncles, Airman First Class Daniel Collins Jr. and his wife Laura Beth, Stallion Collins, Tyler Collins, Robert Jones and Anthony Jones; three aunts, Ramona Galardo, Bianca Collins and Theresa Spruill; a godmother, Nichole Rosado; a godfather, Nekosis Hunter; and many great-aunts, great-uncles and cousins.

The family received visitors on August 7 at Brockett Funeral Home in Southampton, where a funeral service was held at noon. Interment followed in Shinnecock Cemetery.

Turning Point

The Southampton Arts Center was filled with incredible talent, energy and generosity last Thursday — both on stage and in the audience, it was an all-star lineup of the men and (mostly) women who run the region’s nonprofit organizations. Having gathered for an Express Sessions conversation, it turned into a clarion call: Arts organizations, charities helping to feed families, groups focusing on aiding children, or animals, or historic preservation, or community health, or victims of domestic violence — they all had a unified message for the community — “we need help.” It must be said, the South Fork is a ... by Editorial Board
