At the January 9 Southampton Village trustees meeting, I introduced “Project Fairness.” The Southampton Village system of calculating the assessed value of properties produces absurd and unfair results. Results that have the assessed value of 700 Meadow Lane, a property that sold for $112.5 million, at 0.003 of its market value. Results that have the assessed value of $1 million properties at 0.009. We, the undersigned, as former board trustees for the Southampton History Museum, have worked tirelessly in keeping the museum relevant in our community. A dispute has arisen between the museum and the Conscience Point Shellfish Hatchery over the use of a portion of the museum’s property leased by the hatchery [“Eviction Notice Sparks a Split Between Venerable Museum and Shellfish Group,” 27east.com, November 20]. Submissions are now being accepted for the fourth annual Bliss Morehead Poetry Grant. The $1,000 grant is awarded each April to the competition winner. Applicants must be unpublished poets aged 17 or older and reside on the East End of Long Island (Riverhead and points east). Bliss Morehead was a resident of Shelter Island who dedicated much of her life to the art of poetry. The Westhampton Beach School District is now registering children for the 2025-26 school year. To be eligible, students must be 5 years old as of December 1, 2025.
