Sarah Ann Zimmerman of Hampton Bays died peacefully in her Minneapolis home on August 30. She was 82.
Born in Michigan, she spent most of her adult life in New York.
After raising her children, she returned to school to earn her master’s degree in social work at Stony Brook University, and went on to devote her career to hospice care. Among her many professional accomplishments, she was especially proud of her work with grieving children, co-founding and leading East End Hospice’s Camp Good Grief.
Upon retirement, Zimmerman moved to Minnesota, where she lived near family, was active in her church, and continued her good work as a hospice volunteer. “She has taken her place among the angels now,” her survivors said.
She is survived by her children, Scott (Connie) and Charles (Kimberly) Lenz; step-children, Stacy (Drew) Henderson, James (Yumi) Zimmerman Jr., and Hilarie Page; grandson, Riley Lenz; siblings, Bridget (Paul) Moeller, David Clark, and William Barko; and her beloved poodle, Suzy Q. She was predeceased by her mother, Mary Clark; husband, James J. Zimmerman; step-daughter, Mary Ashley Zimmerman; grandson, Aaron Lenz; and sister, Deborah Hatt.
Interment will be at St. Patrick Cemetery in Huntington on Friday, October 20, at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to the donor’s charity of choice.
