Tuttle Avenue students and their parents and caregivers attended the school’s second annual Reading Under the Stars event on November 15. The night full of fun activities was designed to bring families together and to relax with reading activities.  The Eastport Fire Department built a bonfire as students and guests laid out blankets and chairs and camped out while reading their favorite books. The PTO, SEPTO and Center Moriches library set up tables in the rotunda, and the book fair was open for everyone to purchase new books. A food truck also provided a delicious dinner menu. Southampton Elementary School Prekindergarten students learned about the

The high school students read, “Keepunumuk: Weeachumun's Thanksgiving Story”

Emma Cervone, a senior at Southampton High School, was recently presented with the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizen Award. She earned the award by possessing the qualities of dependability, service, leadership and patriotism in her home, school and community. Cervone, who plans to major in music/voice performance in college, is a member of the school’s Mariner’s Patriot Club, Student Council and Best Buddies program and runs winter and spring track. She also participates in her school’s theater productions and performing groups, including choir and Voices of Southampton. She was also inducted into the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Outside of school, she volunteers for Girl Scouts and is a cantor at the Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton.

In addition to joining the in-person event at the airbase on Thanksgiving morning, Raynor Country Day School also hosted an on-campus event leading up to the big day.  Prior to the Thanksgiving recess, students donated $5 in order to wear a

Service Academy Nominations Announced
 

U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin announced 25 local applicants from across New York’s First Congressional District as his nominees to the United States Service Academies. Four are from East End schools.

Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York; U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland; U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado; and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.

Criteria for nomination includes academic achievement, leadership potential, demonstration of character and participation in extracurricular activities.

Locally, Kendall Coard of Southampton was nominated to the U.S. Naval Academy; Andrew Souhrada of Southampton, Samantha Schaumloffel of Remsenburg, and Maximus Haynia of Quogue were all nominated to the U.S. Military Academy, West Point.

Maeve Springer of Shelter Island was judged the winner of the 2022 senior spelling bee at the school. The Prep 7 student outspelled a field of 20 students to earn the right to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Prep 6 student Madison Giraldo placed second, and fifth-grader Gabriel Torrealba placed third.

The OLH Hamptones, Hamptonix, Joyful Noise and Dance Company invite the local and parish communities to share in the Family Advent Service and tree lighting at the school on Tuesday, December 6, at 7 p.m. The indoor tree will be lit between Advent reading and carols. The outdoor tree at the north campus will then be lit. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Rehearsals are underway for the December 18 and 19 production of “A Black Christmas.” The school’s annual Christmas show will feature a cast of over 300 students in an original parody based on the Christmas gospel that features choral music, ballet, jazz and tap dance sequences. Admission is free.

The first 200 chances have been entered into the February Bucks for Books raffle to benefit the school. The fundraiser will give a top prize of $10,000, along with other prizes, totaling $15,000.

The East Hampton Healthcare Foundation has expanded its student scholarship program and will now award two scholarships in 2025.
