Hampton Bays Elementary School students are gearing up for St. Patrick’s Day through a variety of fun and engaging learning activities, including an activity in Claire Urizzo’s third grade class in which students practiced their writing skills by penning some of the reasons they feel lucky on paper shamrocks. Jennifer Warren’s third graders used paper shamrocks to practice the different ways to represent fractions. They also jotted down the reasons they feel lucky on a decorative project featuring a rainbow and pot of gold.

Hampton Bays Elementary School students celebrated Read Across America Week and Dr. Seuss’ birthday through schoolwide and classroom activities that inspired them to pick up books and read. The week kicked off with students and staff wearing as many colors as they could to coincide with the Dr. Seuss book “My Many Colored Days.” It continued with other theme days, including Mismatched Socks Day to align with the popular “Fox in Socks.” Each day, students heard from a mystery reader who read from Dr. Seuss books during the morning announcements. They also participated in “Drop Everything and Read” time for 10-minute stints. In the classrooms, teachers engaged their students with reading activities such as book discussions and guessing games surrounding Dr. Seuss’ books.

Members of Hampton Bays Elementary School’s service club, K-Kids, recently raised $200 for Camp Flying Point in Southampton as part of an annual autism awareness fundraiser. For the fundraiser, the club sold autism awareness bracelets during their lunch periods throughout the week of February 14.

Southampton Elementary School recently participated in Read Across America Week. The program promotes reading and the idea that there is room in the community for all readers. Students celebrated in the school’s library by reading more than 400 books in fun places such as boxes, blanket forts and under tables. Joined by staff, they ended the week with a “Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character” day.

Students celebrated in the school’s library by reading more than 400 books in fun places such as boxes, blanket forts and under tables.
