Hampton Bays Middle School students recently took part in Sandy Hook Promise’s annual Start With Hello Week. The program's goal is to teach students the skills they need to reach out to those who may be dealing with social isolation and create a culture of inclusion and connectedness within their classroom, school and community. During the weeklong program, student leaders greeted their peers at the front door each morning, and all students participated in activities that encouraged peer-to-peer interaction and communication. Family members also took part in the initiative during open house by writing positive messages that were shared on a bulletin board in the main hallway. COURTESY HAMPTON BAYS SCHOOL DISTRICT

Southampton High School sophomore Israel Ruiz Nava is among the creative arts students who are kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month with a cultural lesson on one of the oldest art forms — weaving. Students reviewed the rich tradition of weaving styles and techniques of South America that have greatly influenced the craft since 10,000 BC. Building on the school’s Hispanic Heritage Month theme, “Todos Somos, Somos Uno: We Are All, We Are One,” the students also learned about the power of community work. Once complete, their amazing woven works of art will be hung in the school library. COURTESY SOUTHAMPTON SCHOOL DISTRICT
