Shirley Wouters dies at 85

Shirley Wouters (née Downs) died on January 2 at the Hamptons Care Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing. She was 85.

Born on June 16, 1924, in Westhampton Beach to Walter Downs and Bessie Tenegren, she lived in Hampton Bays for all of her adult life. She was the wife of Fred C. Wouters Jr., who was a longtime fireman and a Hampton Bays fire commissioner.

Mrs. Wouters was the director of arts and crafts at the Southampton Nursing Home.

She is survived by two sons, Robert Gregor and his wife Kathy of Hampton Bays and Patrick Gregor and his wife Diane of Remsenburg; two daughters, Shirel Clemenz and her husband Kevin of Hampton Bays and Susie Friend her husband Robert, also of Hampton Bays; five grandchildren, Kimberly Ottati and her husband Patrick of Hampton Bays, Shawn Gregor and his wife Tabitha of Hampton Bays, Patrick Gregor Jr. of Remsenburg, Ryan Gregor of Remsenburg and Brianne Gregor of Hampton Bays; and three great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Fred C. Wouters Jr., she was predeceased by two brothers, Walter and Chester Downs; two sisters, Yvonne Whitman and Gladys Mueller; and a grandson, Robbie Gregor, and Robbie’s mother, Betty Gregor.

The family received visitors on January 5 at J. Ronald Scott Funeral Home in Hampton Bays. Daniel Harris, chaplain of the Hampton Bays Fire Department, officiated at funeral services on January 6 at the funeral home. Interment followed at Good Ground Cemetery in Hampton Bays.
