Sympathetically, I told my students last week that the use of cellphones wasn’t allowed in my classes. When I became a professor (of journalism) in 1978, cellphones were certainly not an issue. But, these days, youngsters are, I’d say, more attached to their cellphones than any other object (exceeded only perhaps, for those of driving age, by their cars). And there is obsessive use of them. Scholarships Avaialbe for Students Pursuing Health Care Education

The East Hampton Healthcare Foundation has expanded its student scholarship program and will now award two scholarships in 2025. The health care education scholarships will award $2,500 per year of study to two graduating high school seniors in the Town of East Hampton who will be pursuing a health care education at a two-year technical school or four-year college. Special consideration will be given to applicants in the BOCES nursing program who are intending to work in health care in East Hampton Town after graduation. The Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation will be the beneficiary of a “Tail-Gating” party at Uber Geek Brewery in Riverhead on Saturday, February 8, from 1 to 4 p.m. The brewery is located at 400 Hallett Avenue. The event is intended to showcase adoptable pets as a buildup to the Super Bowl the next day. Sound Aircraft Offering a Guide for Aspiring Pilots Program

Sound Aircraft Services at East Hampton Airport is hosting a program for young people to learn about becoming a pilot. The “Guide for Aspiring Aviators and Their Families” will take place on Friday, February 7, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the airport, 173 Daniels Hole Road in Wainscott. A new program for teens, “Ambassadors for the Long Island Collection,” is being offered by the East Hampton Library. Two Whoppers

Governor Kathy Hochul recently issued two whoppers of vetoes of measures passed by the New York State Legislature. One was of a bill that recognizes the Montaukett Indian Nation. As East Hampton Town declared in a proclamation in November, “the Montaukett remain resilient.” But don’t tell that to Governor Hochul.
