Ella Coady and Elie Poremba led the Southampton girls golf team all spring to second-place finishes in both League IV and at the Suffolk County Championships, where Poremba staved off Coady and Smithtown East’s Sophia Corso for the overall individual title.
Poremba, who was joined by her teammate Coady at the New York State Championships, was named All-Long Island in addition to earning All-County and All-League honors. Coady was All-County and All-League and she was also the recipient of the Chick Evans Scholarship, a full, four-year housing and tuition scholarship for golf caddies; Coady is attending Penn State University.
The Southampton girls track team had a successful spring season, one in which it tied both Mattituck and Port Jefferson for the League VIII title, then had a number of athletes go far in postseason meets. Livia Lombardi-Benvenuto went to the New York State Track and Field Championships at Middletown High School in the high jump, earning Small Schools Champion, All-County and All-League honors along the way. The team’s 4x100-meter relay team of Diamond Brown, Kyla Cerulo, Sofia Oliveri and Emily Zukosky were Small School Champions, as well, and were All-County. Jeorgie Gavalas was also All-County. Brown, Cerulo, Gavalas, Oliveri, Zukosky, Sloane Edson, Hayden Gilmartin, Melanie Lepis, Riley Mordack, Emma Sur and Lily Telvi each earned All-League honors. The South Fork boys lacrosse team, which includes student-athletes from Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Hampton Bays, Pierson and Southampton, finished a respectable 8-6 in Division, (9-7 overall) with 111.48 power points, just mere points away from the 10th and final playoff spot. Jack Cooper was the team’s All-County selection, while Isaiah Lattanzio and Charlie Corwin were both All-County Honorable Mentions. J.P. Amaden, Luke Castillo, Luca Lattanzio, Ryan McDonnell and Noah Thompson were each All-Division selections.
Juliette Archer led Southampton’s girls lacrosse team all season and earned an All-County Honorable Mention for her efforts. Hailey Cameron, Cece Ginsberg and Cameron Willey were each named All-Division.
Elijah Abella and Daniel McDonnell each earned All-League honors while playing on the Mariners’ baseball team. Riley Herrmann earned Academic All-League honors. McDonnell was also nominated for a Gold Glove as a pitcher and was named the team’s MVP. Bailey Brown was named the team’s Cy Young Award winner and James Dudley was named the team’s Rookie of the Year.
Southampton was recognized by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association as a Scholar-Athlete School of Excellence for the 2022-23 school year. To earn this recognition, 75 percent of the school’s varsity athletic teams were required to hold a GPA above 90 percent.
Southampton also named Derek Reed and Juliette Archer as its Most Outstanding Male and Female Athletes. The NYSPHSAA Suffolk Zone Award, given to one male and one female student who demonstrates character, leadership, and outstanding participation in physical education, were given to Thayer Schwartz and Danna Game Perez.
Southampton also had a number of recipients of Gold Key Awards — co-sponsored by Section XI and NYSPHSAA, these are athletes who have lettered in eight of nine varsity seasons through grades 10-12. They included: Juliette Archer (soccer, basketball, lacrosse), Hailey Cameron (soccer, basketball, winter track, lacrosse), Paige Garvin (volleyball, basketball, lacrosse), Cece Ginsberg (soccer, basketball, lacrosse), Amy Jimnez (soccer, basketball, lacrosse), Thayer Schwartz (soccer, winter track, spring track) and Evan Simioni (cross country, winter track, spring track).
Pierson
The Pierson baseball team won the League X title after going 17-2 (17-3 overall) to easily qualify for the postseason, where it eventually lost to Port Jefferson in the Suffolk County Class C Championship.
Both Gavin Gilbride and Braeden Mott earned All-County honors. Gilbride was also nominated for a Gold Glove at the catcher position and named the team’s MVP. Max Krotman, Dom Mancino, Christian Pantina, Charles Schaefer and Andy Wayne were each named All-League. Pantina was given the Coaches Award and Nathan Dee was given the team’s Most Improved Player award. Chad Federico was named Academic All-League.
Finn Goodale and Ashley Weatherwax were the two All-League selections for the Pierson/Bridgehampton softball team. Weatherwax was also given the team’s Coaches Award. Fiona Martin was named the team’s MVP and Lizzie Hallock was named Most Improved.
The East Hampton/Pierson boys tennis team was expected to have a strong spring and it didn’t disappoint, winning the League IV title with an undefeated 11-0 record and finishing 12-2 overall. The Bonackers followed that up with a deep run in the Section XI Team Tournament, eventually falling to No. 2 Ward Melville in the semifinals.
The success of the team was reflected in the postseason honors earned by its players. All 10 starters earned All-County and All Divisions honors, which included Max Astilean, Jagger and Jesse Cohen, Henry and Nick Cooper, Miguel Garcia, Cameron and Kiefer Mitchell, Chris Pilarski and Armando Rangel. Astilean additionally earned All-State honors for reaching the New York State Championships at the USTA National Tennis Center, where he reached the Round of 32.
It was a successful spring for the East Hampton/Pierson/Bridgehampton girls track team as it had multiple athletes compete at the county meet. Pierson’s Meredith Spolarich led the team in the pentathlon, earning All-Sectional, All-County, Academic All-County and All-League honors. Bridgehampton’s Leslie Samuel was All-County and All-League in both the 200-meter dash and long jump and East Hampton’s Kaili Moore was All-County and All-League in the shot put. Dylan Cashin, Leah McMarron, Sara O’Brien, Ryleigh O’Donnell, Gabrielle Payne and Becca Trowbridge were each All-League in their respective events. Spolarich was also named the team’s MVP, O’Brien was named the Most Improved Player and Shirley Jiang and Sam Ruano were given the Coaches Awards. Information on the boys track team was not provided.
The East Hampton/Pierson girls lacrosse team had a front-loaded schedule, in which it had to play a number of the top teams in the county, therefore leading to a much more competitive second half of the schedule, when it improved its record and finished 5-9 with 86.19 power points. Melina Sarlo and Ava Tintle were both All-County Honorable Mentions, Emma McGrory was named All-Division and Cali Wilson was named Rookie of the Year. Lily Perello was named the team’s Unsung Hero and Claire McGovern was the recipient of the Bob Vlahakis Scholarship, given to a player in Suffolk County who has overcome adversity through injury. Sarlo was also named Team MVP, McGrory was given the Coaches Award and Maddie Elflein was given the Most Improved Award.
Bridgehampton
The Bridgehampton/Ross baseball team, in just its second season back as a varsity team after decades of not playing, earned a postseason berth after going 10-9 in League X play. After defeating Port Jefferson in the C/D Qualifier of the Section XI tournament, the Killer Bees lost to Babylon in the Small Schools Championship, and then lost to Chapel Field in the Class D Regional Final.
Milo Tompkins was named League X MVP and also earned All-County honors. Kris and Scott Vinski earned All-League honors and Kai Alversa earned Academic All-League honors.
