This past summer, certainly one of the more unique in recent memory, could best be described as a day at the beach.

That is not to say that it was all sunshine and gentle ocean breezes, but rather a more typical day at the beach from childhood memory: one where at first one is hesitant about approaching the incoming waves, then sticks a toe in to become acclimated with the water, then frolics with abandon in the delicious surf for what feels like an eternity — only to be told to get out by a shrieking parent or watchful lifeguard, “You’ve been in there long enough, it’s time to dry off!”

And so it went. At first, the denizens of the Hamptons gathered gingerly after the long slog of restrictions, isolation and fear, then partied as if there was no tomorrow, then were pushed back into their respective cocoons a bit with renewed concern.

Regardless of the state of the pandemic, the level of vaccinations or other public health guidelines, the photos from this summer tell a story that’s been told before, revealing that the Hamptons pretty much has retained the reputation for being an epicenter of high-gloss summer fashion, frivolity and fun. From restaurants both tony and towny, to charity galas, to the glorious simplicity of the endless beaches, our little social sandbar did not disappoint.

Here, a look back at some of this summer’s highlights, with a few recent moments included.

To all who smiled for the camera, either knowingly or not, you were all a part of an evocative, colorful collage that was a joy to capture and compose.

‘Inherent in the Blood’

The Eugenics Record Office at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, a private research facility in Suffolk County, which operated from 1910 to 1939, was pivotal to the spread of eugenics through the United States and the world, as detailed in a forthcoming book by Mark A. Torres, “Long Island and the Legacy of Eugenics: Station of Intolerance.” Ultimately discredited as a pseudoscience, eugenics “aimed to develop a master race of human beings,” notes Torres. On its website, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, in a section labeled “History,” has an essay on a “historical perspective on genetics” headlined: “Good genes, bad science.” ... 16 Dec 2024 by Karl Grossman

Breakfast at Tiffany's

Did you know: Breakfast is now served at Tiffany’s? Daniel Boulud opened the Blue Box Café at the Fifth Avenue flagship store. My daughter Melissa and I spent a night in the city specifically to be on line in front of the iconic building. We couldn’t get a reservation for the day when we had theater tickets, but six seats are reserved for walk-ins, as well as seven seats at the bar. We were the first on line. After the doors opened, we were escorted to the elevators that took us to the sixth-floor home department and the café. True ... by Denise Gray Meehan
