Southampton Town Police arrested a Hampton Bays man Saturday night after a 3-hour standoff with police, who believed him to be armed, at a Springville Road home. Police say they were called shortly after 8 p.m. with a report that a man was menacing another person in the house with a firearm. When officers arrived a person outside the house told them that the man was inside and was armed. When the man refused to come out a Town Police crisis negotiator was brought to the house. I am a Westhampton Beach resident and I watched the work closely at the windmill [“Top Two Portions of Dix Windmill Assembled in Westhampton Beach,” 27east.com, January 7]. The contractor who moved the windmill from its original site to the new location, and who also pieced it together at the new location, didn’t get any credit in your article. At their last meeting, Southampton Village trustees heard ideas for significantly altering Somerset Avenue in order to decrease through traffic during the afternoon commute. Several things were notable. First, all three plans closed a quarter-mile stretch at the north end of Somerset permanently for southbound traffic. Second, the plans were remarkably well-developed and detailed, despite this being the first public discussion, and despite the fact that a lengthy public process involving neighbors two years ago did not recommend or even seriously consider such a permanent closure.
