A traffic experiment is coming. From April 21 to May 2, between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m., the Southampton Town Highway Department will be blocking the second lane of County Road 39 east of Sandy Hollow Road and leaving the light at the intersection green for both roads, allowing traffic coming off Sandy Hollow to merge with that on 39 headed west. All of the stop lights between there and Sunrise Highway will be turned to blink yellow instead of cycling through red and green. The experiment is the brainchild of Highway Superintendent Charlie McArdle, who thinks the changes will smooth the westward flow of traffic in afternoons.
