It was a successful Senior Night and Dig Pink Game for the Pierson/Bridgehampton girls volleyball team on Friday night when it hosted Southampton.

First off, the Whalers raised $522 as part of their Dig Pink Game through donations and a bake sale for the Ellen Hermanson Foundation which, as stated on ellenhermanson.org, was established in 1997 to honor the memory of Ellen Hermanson, an activist and an advocate for breast cancer patients and their families. A journalist, Hermanson, who died of breast cancer in 1995, sought to educate her readers about the importance of early detection, the challenges of living with breast cancer, the very real but little discussed or understood issue of pain management, and the debilitating effects of breast cancer on the entire family.

The Whalers then honored its six seniors, which included Lyra Aubry, Mariana Gutierrez, Helena Kolhoff, Khalila Martin, Caroline McGuire and Sheilly Ruiz. And they went on to successfully defeat Southampton, 3-0, in set scores of 26-24, 25-18, 25-21.

Aubry finished with seven kills and three blocks, Kolhoff record six kills and five aces and Gutierrez served up five aces.

“The first set was definitely really close,” Pierson head coach Hilary Corwin said. “There were also nine missed serves in the first set. After that the girls kind of picked it up and wound up finishing with more aces than missed serves, which was awesome.”

The victory improved Pierson to 5-9 in League VII, 5-11 overall. Being that it is one of only two Class C teams in Suffolk County with Port Jefferson, Corwin said she would discuss possibly petitioning Section XI, the governing body of Suffolk County high school athletics, with her athletic director Brian Tardif to force a “C” Championship with the Royals, who are 13-2 in League VII, 15-2 overall. The Whalers were scheduled to finish out the regular season against Ross on Tuesday and Port Jeff on Wednesday. Victories in both matches would go a long way in a successful petition, but Corwin said win or lose against Port Jeff this week, she’s apt to file the petition either way.
