Social Justice Issue

We recently had the honor of addressing the breakfast meeting of the Southampton Democratic Club, headed by Barbara Weber-Floyd. Our focus was on our latest book, published by Routledge, “Education for Social Justice: The Meaning of Justice and Current Research.” The publisher found the book so important that an electronic copy is available to anyone for free. We wrote the book with support from Michelli’s doctoral students from Johns Hopkins University and City University of New York who had written dissertations on one of the elements of social justice. In this election year, social justice is such a critical issue, ... by Staff Writer

Integrity and Guts

Today, I voted for Tommy John Schiavoni for New York State Assembly. Tommy John, as a member of the Southampton Town Board, has always had the back of the East Quogue residents. Not only has he supported and attended our concerts, our holiday tree lighting ceremonies and civic meetings, but he has always offered a ready ear to listen to our concerns in East Quogue and to fight for us. When Discovery Land’s mega development off Lewis Road in East Quogue, presently called the Lewis Road Planned Residential Development, was before the Southampton Town Planning Board, Tommy John was the ... by Staff Writer

Funding Source Is Key

Proposition 3 presents an opportunity to improve the water quality of Lake Agawam, yet it demands careful attention to details of how this land will be used and funded. Under this proposition, Southampton Town seeks to alienate a smaller parcel — 69,989 square feet (1.6 acres) — to house an algae harvester, a project I helped initiate in 2019 in partnership with the State Department of Environmental Conservation and then-Governor Andrew Cuomo. The harvester will remove the lake’s legacy load of nitrogen, phosphorus and harmful microcystin. This project will address nutrient buildup temporarily; however, Lake Agawam needs a long-term solution. ... by Staff Writer

Total Disrespect

I went for a walk the other evening, as I often do. I came upon a neighbor’s home. They had a sign on their lawn, supporting one of the major candidates for president, surrounded by decorations of pumpkins. This display had been vandalized, with the pumpkins broken and put in the street. The candidate’s sign was under the mess. This kind of thing has become all too common. It demonstrates a total disrespect for private property and an individual’s right to free speech. I think it’s completely unnecessary to say whom my neighbor’s sign supported. Disrespect for the law and ... by Staff Writer
