Credit Is Due

I am a Westhampton Beach resident and I watched the work closely at the windmill [“Top Two Portions of Dix Windmill Assembled in Westhampton Beach,” 27east.com, January 7]. The contractor who moved the windmill from its original site to the new location, and who also pieced it together at the new location, didn’t get any credit in your article. I think it’s important they are recognized. The company is Dawn House & Building Movers, owned by Stanley Kazel. Jess B. Estie Westhampton Beach 11 Jan 2025 by Staff Writer

Options Exist

At their last meeting, Southampton Village trustees heard ideas for significantly altering Somerset Avenue in order to decrease through traffic during the afternoon commute. Several things were notable. First, all three plans closed a quarter-mile stretch at the north end of Somerset permanently for southbound traffic. Second, the plans were remarkably well-developed and detailed, despite this being the first public discussion, and despite the fact that a lengthy public process involving neighbors two years ago did not recommend or even seriously consider such a permanent closure. Orwell Redux

It’s George Orwell’s “Nineteen Eighty-Four” all over again. Donald Trump has his own “Ministry of Truth.” According to Trump, January 6, 2021, was a “day of love.” Well, we were all glued to the TV watching the violence and carnage at the Capitol in Washington, D.C., four years ago. Capitol Police officers were severely beaten by the rioters, and a few subsequently died. Members of Congress were hiding from the rioters who were hunting them. The mob was threatening to hang Mike Pence from a gallows that they erected. The Capitol building was desecrated in every way imaginable … including ... by Staff Writer

Dig Deeper

We have read with great interest your coverage of our response to the Conscience Point Shellfish Hatchery’s unauthorized commercial activities on our land at the Conscience Point Historic Site and Nature Walk. The title of your December 4 editorial was “Stop Digging.” Instead, we ask everyone to dig a little deeper into the facts and circumstances. First and foremost, the Southampton History Museum is a nonprofit educational organization chartered by the New York State Board of Regents and incorporated under the New York State Education Department. Something Fishy

I’m all for a just resolution of the dispute regarding the proper development of the Westwoods property that recognizes the legitimate interests of the Shinnecock Nation, the neighbors adjacent to the Westwoods property and the Hampton Bays community. However, the letter recently sent out of the blue by the U.S. Department of the Interior simply regarding recording the property in a government database goes further [“U.S. Department of Interior Says Westwoods Is ‘Aboriginal’ Shinnecock Land, but Southampton Town Will Press Lawsuit,” 27east.com, January 2]. In coming down heavily on the side of the Shinnecock in its stated rationale in the ... by Staff Writer
