Vice President Joseph Biden Jr. and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, visited the Southampton area for a brief vacation on Friday and were scheduled to leave Long Island on Wednesday, according to the vice president’s office at the White House.

Mr. Biden reportedly landed at Frances S. Gabreski Airport in Westhampton on Friday afternoon, and his motorcade was spotted entering Southampton Village shortly after 2:30 p.m. that day.

According to the White House, the Bidens were staying as guests at a private residence in the area and had no public events scheduled during their visit.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a no-fly zone over much of the Westhampton, Southampton and East Hampton air space, in effect Friday afternoon, Alex Hanyo of Malloy Air East, a fixed-base operator in Westhampton, confirmed.

Mr. Biden’s last visit to Southampton Village, also of a personal nature, took place over Memorial Day weekend,
when he reportedly stayed at an estate on First Neck Lane in the village.

Sally Richardson, a reservation manager at The Village Latch Hotel on Hill Street, noted on Friday that a “large group of White House people and Secret Service are in the area” and that “there’s not a room to be had in town.”

On Wednesday, before leaving, Mr. Biden, a 6- to 8-handicap golfer, took a lesson with Greg Garvin, the pro at Southampton Golf Club.

Appealing to the Gut

Attack ads. They’ve become a big force in Long Island election campaigns. Several days ago, a little over a week before Election Day this year, I traveled to southern Maryland for a family event, turned on the TV in the motel room, and there they were, hundreds of miles from here: political attack ads, one after another. The names of candidates, other than those running for president and vice president, of course, were unknown to me. But the political TV commercials were thoroughly familiar. Attack ads have clearly become a fixture of politics in the United States. In my master’s ... by Karl Grossman

We All Pay

I can’t be the only reader of the police blotter who is astounded by what can only be called the stupidity of drivers who leave wallets, jewelry, envelopes of cash and other valuables in unlocked cars with keys visible and inside. Think about this: Cars and valuables stolen. My car and personal property insurance rates are gonna skyrocket because of the irresponsible, arrogant and, yes, stupid behavior of a few. Your rates will rise, too. The police then must spend time attending to those avoidable incidents, rather than preventing serious crime. Come on — lock your cars. The Sound of Fall

Now in the autumn of my life The bright colors of fall bring a bounty Paired with a desperate knowing that soon Gas-powered leaf blowers will surround me. Such a horrid sound — must we really all suffer This exercise that’s so pointless and dumb? They blow them into the street or on the lawn of a neighbor As if there aren’t more leaves to come. We rebel against unmuffled cars And curse airports with low-flying jets We’re so sensitive if music’s too loud And we muzzle our barking pets. We legislate against all forms of pollution Be it from ... by Staff Writer
